Coalition members

Coalition members are organisations that have endorsed the Better Streets Manifesto.

Everyone wants to improve their streets, but we’re often doing it for different reasons. Whether you’re a part of a Parents and Citizens (P&C) committee wanting your kids to be able to ride to school safely, a business owner wanting to connect with more local customers, a cycling club, advocacy group or part of an urban planning network, the Better Streets coalition can amplify your voice and ensure your group is represented at a national level. Better Streets knows how to improve the streets you care about – and we’re happy to teach you how to take more effective, scalable action today.

Manifesto

  • Our vision for Australia is that our streets make people of all ages and abilities feel welcome, safe, and comfortable to walk, cycle and rest.

Streets play a crucial role in enhancing our quality of life. They serve as connectors between places, facilitate social interaction, and contribute to the overall aesthetic and functionality of a community. Well designed streets can promote people to walk, engage in outdoor activity, which can lead to improved physical health. Streets that prioritise public transportation, walking, and cycling can reduce reliance on cars, thereby decreasing vehicle emissions and improving air quality, which has positive health implications.

  • Freedom, equality, social justice, responsibility, and a world of beauty.

Derived from Schwartz’s Theory of Basic Human Values.

  • Our mission is to actively advocate for governments at all levels – federal, state and local - to significantly increase funding and delivery priorities for infrastructure, initiatives that support better streets for all and to adopt our recommendations.

We believe that these changes are not only essential for creating a more sustainable, healthy, and equitable Australia, but they’re also completely achievable through the adoption of better ideas, better conversations and better action.

  • We recommend that governments:

    • Get kids active- Encourage 75% of children to walk, cycle, scoot, or take public transport to school every day, setting them up with healthy habits for life.

    • Slow vehicles down - Make local streets and shopping streets quieter and safer with 30 km/h speeds.

    • Boost local businesses - Support local businesses by improving and expanding beautiful streetscapes that people enjoy.

    • Make more crossings - Make it easy and convenient to walk by creating a connected walking network and crossings.

    • Provide transport choices - Make it easy and safe to ride by building a connected, direct, and convenient cycling network.

It was important for us to be seen as part of a larger movement
