Coalition partners
Coalition partners are organisations that have endorsed the Better Streets Manifesto.
Everyone wants to improve their streets, but different people and groups have different reasons for this. Whether you’re a part of a Parents and Citizens (P&C) committee that’s determined for kids to be able to ride to school safely, a business owner wanting to connect with more local customers, a bike advocacy group or part of an urban planning network, the Better Streets Coalition can amplify your voice and ensure your group is represented at a national level. Better Streets knows how to improve the streets you care about – and we’re happy to teach you how to take more effective, scalable action today.
Manifesto
-
Our vision for Australia is that our streets make people of all ages and abilities feel welcome, safe, and comfortable to walk, ride and rest.
Streets play a crucial role in enhancing our quality of life. They serve as connectors between places, facilitate social interaction, and contribute to the overall aesthetic quality and function of a community. Well-designed streets make it easier for people to walk and engage in outdoor activities, leading to better health. Streets that prioritise public transport, walking and bike-riding reduce reliance on cars, decreasing vehicle emissions and improving air quality.
-
Freedom, equality, social justice, responsibility and a world of beauty.
Derived from Schwartz’s Theory of Basic Human Values.
-
Our mission is to actively advocate for governments at all levels – federal, state / territory and local - to adopt our recommendations, significantly increasing funding for and accelerating the delivery of active transport infrastructure that supports better streets for all.
We believe that these changes are not only essential for creating a more sustainable, healthy, and equitable Australia, but also completely achievable through the adoption of better ideas, conversations and plans of action.
-
We recommend that governments:
Get kids active- Encourage 75% of children to walk, ride a bike or scooter, or take public transport to and from school every day, setting them up with healthy habits for life.
Slow vehicles down - Make local streets and shopping streets quieter and safer with 30 km/h speed limits.
Boost local businesses - Support local businesses by improving and expanding beautiful streetscapes that people enjoy.
Make more crossings - Make it easy and convenient to walk by creating a connected walking network with many places to cross roads and streets.
Provide transport choices - Make it easy and safe to ride by building a connected, direct and convenient cycling network.
“It was important for us to be seen as part of a larger movement”
