Better Streets Federal Campaign is Gaining Momentum
Better Streets Federal Election Campaign Update
With the 2025 Australian federal election approaching, the Better Streets campaign is in full swing. Our goal is simple: secure commitments from political parties and candidates to fund walking and cycling infrastructure at $15 per person every year, rather than the usual 90 cents per person every year.
Our strategy includes:
✅ Signing up organisations to endorse our Open Letter
✅ Engaging individuals via LinkedIn, newsletters, and word-of-mouth
✅ Contacting electorate candidates directly.
Key Success Metrics:
Getting candidates and parties to adopt our Open Letter asks in their policies
Securing written support from election candidates
Progress So Far:
✔️ 128 public endorsements and 100 organisations, including the Planning Institute of Australia, the Australasian College of Road Safety, Australian Institute of Traffic Planning and Management and more.
✔️ Six new volunteers, each making a big impact
✔️ Media coverage, Board member Tepi McLaughlin co-authored a detailed article in The Conversation with support from other Board members, Sara Stace featured on podcasts like Get Around Caboolture and The Squeaky Wheel.
Our volunteers are powering the campaign forward:
Catherine Meister designed promo tiles supporting our push for $15 per person per year in federal active transport funding.
Hannah Neumayer wrote an article on the benefits of investment in Australia’s 26 largest regional cities.
Michael Power, Megan Sharkey, and others are producing a new Better Streets promotional video.
Federal election social media tiles promoting our asks.
Get Involved!
We need volunteers to:
• Reach out to walking and biking event organisers for endorsements
• Write about the Federal Active Transport Fund grants
• Prepare media briefing notes for motoring bodies

Stay tuned for updates— National Ride to School Day ( March 21, 2025)) is coming up, and we’ll be sharing how our Election Asks will create safer streets for kids! Additionally, we plan to release a webform to make it easy for Better Streets supporters to contact their local candidates and ask them to express their written support for the Better Streets Federal Election asks.
Together, we can make a significant impact in this critical election year!
