Better Streets Calls for a Fairer, Safer Road System in NSW

The NSW Government is reviewing the Roads Act 1993, and Better Streets has submitted a strong response calling for legislation to create a fairer, safer, and more sustainable transport system.

Our key recommendations focus on shifting the balance of the law to prioritise people over cars. This means:

  • Safe Streets for All: Introducing a Safe System approach that reduces road trauma and protects vulnerable road users, including pedestrians and cyclists.

  • Clear Road Rules that Support Active Transport: Addressing legal ambiguities that disadvantage people walking and cycling, and ensuring laws support, rather than hinder, sustainable transport.

  • Accountability for Dangerous Driving: Strengthening penalties and enforcement against reckless driving to create a culture of responsibility on our roads.

  • Encouraging Mode Shift: Aligning road laws with NSW Government policies that aim to increase walking, cycling, and public transport use.

The review of the Road Act 1993 is a key opportunity to reframe our transport laws to reflect modern priorities—safety, sustainability, and equity. Better Streets urges the NSW Government to seize this moment to create a legal framework that supports healthier, people-friendly streets.
