Better Streets Brisbane

Better Streets Brisbane aims to foster a safer, more accessible, and environmentally friendly street network in Brisbane that priorities pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport users.

“We envision a Brisbane where streets are not just thoroughfares for cars but dynamic communal spaces that enhance the quality of life for everyone.

Through enhancing our pedestrian and cycling infrastructure we can create a safer, healthier and more vibrant Brisbane.”

    • They’re safer with comfortable spaces to walk, scoot, bike, or drive; with a quiet, low-speed, low-traffic atmosphere. Great streets feel easy to use.

    • They’re healthier by making it easier and more natural to walk, wheel or ride for short journeys. Children use great streets to play, stay active and move around easily. Better Streets get your body moving.

    • They’re more enjoyable by offering shade, greenery, seating, shops and cafes, without the constant roar of traffic or the danger of collisions. Great streets are welcoming public spaces, open to everyone.

    • They’re important for Climate Action by promoting a real change in how we use transport, making it easier for more people to embrace zero-carbon mobility options. Changing the world starts by making our streets better.

  • Better Streets Brisbane asks Brisbane City and the Queensland state government to invest in walking, biking, trees, and place making, to:

    • Encourage kids to walk, scoot or bike to school

    • Enable seniors to access local shops without needing to drive

    • Deliver streets that are beautiful places for people to meet and socialise.

We call on the Brisbane City government to:

    • Support 30 km/h for residential streets.

    • Expand the network of zebra crossings to prioritise pedestrian safety.

    • Build a cohesive network of protected bike lanes.

    • Deliver more bike parking on public land and in new development.

    • Fund more street trees to shade our city.
